Therefore, the fixed-function per-vertex and per-fragment we'll be replaced with user specified programs that would run on each vertex and fragment.

Fully featured instruction sets, more flexibility in the control flow and larger limits on their size are some of the new features of vertex programs and fragment programs, which are supported by GPU-accelerated computing devices.

One of the main reasons why GPUs are so popular today is, because of its ability to allow the developer to reconfigure functions and its algorithms within its code.

The first programmable GPUs brought some excitement to the computer world, because these GPUs had what we all know as a programmable rendering pipeline, which helped developers in many cases, so that you could write your own programs.

The piece of code you write for GPUs are also known as shaders; these programs could be executed for each vertex or fragment that is part of the video card.

When programmable GPUs came into the scene many developers felt as though it was the future and that we have leaped forward into a better tomorrow.

High level languages for GPU programming such as HLSL, GLSL, and Cg emerged due to the fact that you could reprogram your GPU.

The complexities and expressiveness of many assembly languages also, increased due to the fact that programmers could create shaders for their GPUs.

The focus of programmers on GPU architecture, is on the fact that they can insert programmable pieces of code to their GPUs known as shaders.

The fact that shaders have become more powerful and the vertex and fragment program of GPU applications of all types have increased in complexities as well, GPUs are becoming more and more powerful for computing devices.

The GPUs that you will encounter today are surrounded by supporting fixed-function units which can easily be programmable.

A single program multiple-data (SPMD) programming model is followed by the programmable units of the GPU.

In order to achieve optimum efficiency the GPU processes many vertex or fragment elements in parallelism while using the exact same program.

GPU-accelerated computing devices are an example of how we are evolving from one technology to another.

We don't even look at CPUs in the same light anymore, because we have realized that our creation was not as clever as our next creation.

We will acknowledge our pattern and recognize that we are getting better and better at the technology that we have created.

However, we must continue to develop our skills and continue to develop applications that can change the world and bring real value to people.

We have to acquire more knowledge and learn how to use this knowledge because having lots of information doesn't help us achieve our ultimate goals and our ambitions to understand that creation was given to us freely and that we should strive to maintain our world.

 A graphics processing unit or GPU is a specialized processor that offloads 3D graphics rendering from the microprocessor.
