The world in which we live in today is truly an amazing one, the more we learn from it, the more it amazes us as we become masters of this universe.

In today's article, we are going to talk about Stoichiometry, which teaches us to use balanced chemical equations, to calculate reactants and their products. In stoichiometry ratios from balanced equations are used, to calculate how much reactants are needed for a reaction.

The number of substances that are involved in a reaction are studied in stoichiometry, and this is good, because a chemist may want to know the number of substances needed for a reaction, or that same chemist, may want to know the amount of product that a reaction may produce. When a chemist wants to figure out how much compound a reaction has, before the reaction takes place, stoichiometry can help them figure out these numbers.

It is important to know and understand the relationship that exists between products and reactants before a chemist is able to use stoichiometry to run calculations. Before a chemist is able to understand the relationship between reactants and products though, that chemist would have to already have a basic and fundamental understanding about balancing equations.

Balancing equations in chemistry takes several steps, first, the element, which appears to be the more complex, is chosen.

The coefficient is adjusted so that the number matches on both sides, since it is a chemical equation, and there are two sides. Polyatomic ions have to be balanced as a unit, if they are present on both sides, the remaining and least complex atoms are balanced last, using fractional coefficients, if it is necessary. Whole numbers can be obtained by multiplying both sides of the equation by the denominator when a fractional coefficient has been used. By counting the number of atoms each side has, would ensure that the equation has been balanced, properly. Once a chemical equation has been balanced, then stoichiometry can then be used, to figure out how much substance, will be needed, for the reaction to take place.

 

2H2 + O2 --> 2H2O

 

In the balanced equation above, we can see that hydrogen is needed four times as much as oxygen is needed, for the reaction to take place.

A chemist would know how much substance a reaction needs, in order for that reaction to happen, by looking at the number of atoms present in the equation. A chemical equation would include, elements, molecules or ions in the reactant and products and their states.

Through the stoichiometry coefficient, chemists can find out how much each particle is needed relative to one another. The number written in front of the atoms, ions, and molecules, represents the stoichiometry coefficient.

Stoichiometry is really fascinating, but in order to fully understand it, the chemist must also understand the different types of reactions, which can take place between elements. The six basic types of reactions are combustion, combination or synthesis, decomposition, single displacement, double displacement, and acid-base reaction.
