Cells Hold a Very Special Place in The Human Body
Cells are a wonderful part of the body, they truly do an amazing work for us, and it would be a good idea if we know about them a bit better. In today’s article we are going to talk about the proteins that are on our bodies, which are formed with amino acids.
An amino group (-NH) and a carboxyl group (-COOH) are the two functional groups, which form part of the molecules known as amino acids. Theα-carbon of the carboxylic acid is used as the link, between the amino group and the carboxyl group, forming a bond with the same carbon.
The central carbon of the amino acid is known as the α-carbon, we ought to know about amino acids, because they are all over the human body.
Every process, which takes place within and between cells, is happening due to well defined macromolecules, which are formed from amino acids, known as proteins. A covalently-bonded sequence of amino acids, the way that the sequence interacts with water, as well as the chemicals and the physical properties, of that sequence, help to form what we know as the three-dimensional structure of proteins.
The major component of the dry weight of cells are proteins, which are involved in all the functions of the cells. Cellular locomotion, cell support and cell signaling are some of the specific functions, that belong to a protein.
Enzymes, antibody and insulin are some of the seven types of proteins, which exist in our bodies. The design of the structure of a protein, defines the function of that protein; the design of the structure of a protein may be globular or fibrous.
When a person is sick, the body responds by sending an antibody to defend the body from antigens, which are foreign invaders. Bacteria, viruses and other foreign intruders, are usually expelled from a person’s body, through antibodies, which travel through the bloodstream to accomplish its tasks.
Another type of protein is responsible for the contractions and the movements of the muscle, this protein is known as the contractile protein, and some example of these include actin and myosin. Another type of protein is responsible for facilitating biochemical reaction, this type of protein is known as an enzyme. Different types of reactions can take place when an enzyme is present, such reaction may break down, link up or rearrange their substrates.
Another type of protein is known as the hormone, and it is responsible for the control of specific psychological processes such as growing and reproduction. Unlike enzymes, which form part of a reaction, hormones are part of a process, which helps the body achieve a certain goal, such as metabolize the foods we eat daily.
Proteins will look very different to the average person, who has never worked at a scientific lab if that person sees a protein from a scientific perspective. Most people believe proteins are only found in our foods, and they are there for nutrition purposes.
The most diverse in structure and function among the classes of macromolecules found in living systems, are proteins. The most abundant organic molecule in living systems are proteins, they are unique in function even when thousands of them form part of one single cell.
