The Importance of Using A Work Breakdown Structure in A Complex Project


The representation in a graphical display of work elements, shown in groups of products or deliverable, is known as a project work breakdown structure (WBS). The total work scope of a project is organized and subdivided, through the WBS, which is a very important tool, to help projects finish successfully.

Changes during a project are minimized, when a lot of thought and planning, is put into a WBS. Effective project planning, execution, controlling and reporting, can be achieved when a WBS becomes a very important tool, to a project manager.

The estimation, time and budget of all work, is described by the WBS; the components of a project, such as a scope, schedule, and cost, are all integrated and related, through the structure and code of the WBS.

The technical objectives of a project, are achieved through the WBS, which contains the project's scope baseline. Given the fact that projects in today's society are very complex, a WBS may determine whether a project is successfully finished or not.

The WBS is also able to provide project managers the ability to resolve, in a professional setting, the problems which occur during a project. Resource management and risk management are under the control of project managers when they follow the particular effective methods, provided by a WBS.

The efficient use of resources during a project is very important, this is the service obligation of a project manager. When project managers are using a WBS on a consistent basis, it would assist project managers to deliver products consistently. A WBS allows project managers to see in real time, the total decomposition of the works and stages of a project, from beginning to end.

The project team's work can be viewed in a WBS, in a deliverable or product-oriented hierarchical decomposition fashion. The WBS is an organization tree that represents a subdivided diagram of the work required to complete a specific project. The budget of a project is also affected by the WBS because it gives a clear description of the work to be performed. Project managers can divide their projects, into more manageable units when they use a WBS, to complete their project.


The development of a bookstore using a WBS

An online bookstore project can take a year to complete because there are many components, which need to be taken into consideration.

Users should be able to search and purchase books, through the website. A user should be able to use the books' titles, author or subject to find these books and buy them online. The way that the books are displayed is also important, for an online books store, because it can make or break the sell. The online bookstore should also be able to provide a way to pay for the books, through a credit card; this is another component of the system, which will require a lot of work.

The project manager would also have to keep in mind that people would have to be trained, because there are many technologies involved, such as .NET, SQL, CSS, HTML which are used during the development of an online bookstore. A WBS would help a project manager develop an online bookstore successfully.
